Forest Interior

The hidden world of understory birds

Beneath the rainforest canopy lies a world of perpetual twilight inhabited by some of the most exquisitely evolved birds on Earth. Pheasants, pittas, and babblers navigate a labyrinth of roots and buttresses, their colors and songs calibrated to the filtered light of the forest floor.

The forest interior is perhaps the most challenging environment for birdwatching: dense vegetation, limited light, and birds that rely more on voice than visibility to communicate. Yet this habitat hosts extraordinary diversity, with many species found nowhere else on Earth.

In the understory, every rustle of leaves might reveal a gem—a Banded Pitta, a Malayan Rail, a species known only from a handful of specimens.
